Abstract

The Blacksmith Fork River, located near Hyrum, Utah (USGS Gaging Station ID: 10113500), serves as a crucial component of the regional water system within a watershed that is predominantly mountainous, consisting of mixed forest and rangeland with minimal development. This geographical setting significantly influences the hydrological responses observed at the gage, which monitors an area characterized by natural topographical and ecological features conducive to varied streamflow patterns. Considering the severe drought conditions that impacted the Western U.S. during 2021, this study aims to scrutinize the streamflow data from this USGS gaging site to assess the impact of the drought on water availability and ecosystem health. Through this analysis, insights into the adaptive management strategies necessary for maintaining ecological balance and water resource sustainability in the face of climatic extremes are sought.
